The Catch-22 of the Birth Control Pill

There is a Catch-22 in women’s health that Ob/Gyns deal with on a daily basis—the negative impact of birth control pills on female sexual function. Before I explain how this happens, let’s review some of the reasons women take the pill in the first place.

In addition to preventing pregnancy, the pill is like a quasi-panacea for all that ails you: menstrual cramps, acne, cycle irregularities, premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (less common cluster of mood, behavioral and physical symptoms that occur during the second half of the menstrual cycle), menstrual headaches, and prevention of cancer (ovarian, uterine, colon), to name a few.
