Make the Most of Date Night at Home

If the sitter’s not available, we typically figure we’ll try again next week. But why should date night require leaving the house? We’re seizing the day these days and setting our own tables for two.

If you’re game but don’t know where to start, take a look at our tips and ideas for date night at home:

Mother's Day Our Way

We were just talking this morning about how, when our kids were really young, all we secretly wanted for Mother’s Day was to get a break from them. Instead, we got a lot of beautiful family time and another screaming headache for which we had to grin and look grateful. And we were grateful for our families, of course, but wouldn’t have minded a little recognition for all the things we were in addition to mothers.

4 Ways Your Relationship Gets Better Once the Kids are grown

When I was a new mom, I dreaded the first time that my daughter said she hated me. I was sure it would break my heart and strip all of my maternal confidence away. Inevitably, it happened. She was coloring on a wall (as young kids do) and I told her to stop. In her little 4-year-old voice, she looked me dead in the eye and said it: I hate you.

Where to Have Sex

When I was a teenager, I used to babysit my cousins so my aunt and uncle could go out and have sex in the back of their minivan. I remember hanging out with my aunt while she prepared for one such outing. She lined the van’s backend with blankets and spritzed it with Calvin Klein’s Obsession. She raised one eyebrow at me and said, “Don’t tell your mom this is what we do when you babysit.”

A Wide View of Relationships

When my son was a toddler he wouldn’t eat anything, almost literally. Pasta, cheese and yogurt were the bulk of his diet. He was my first child and, as many mothers do, I poured all my parental anxiety into micromanagement of his diet. This, of course, did nothing to improve it. Even though he was only two, he surely felt my fear and responded to my pressure by all-the-more-stubbornly refusing to let a fruit or vegetable anywhere near his face.

8 Ways to Clutter up Your Life

That’s right. I am completely over this extreme organizing trend. If I hear the word “KonMari” one more time I will rip out all my dresser drawers and dump them on the floor.

Screen Time for Grownups

I don’t consider myself a helicopter parent by any means, but I do closely monitor my kids’ use of screens and the internet. They don’t have TVs in their rooms, have limited access to social media, and are required to turn over their phones before bed at night. I think my husband and I are doing an excellent job of navigating this new world of media and technology, so good on us.

Relax, Don’t Do It

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time there was a young woman who loved nothing more than lying on the couch, enjoying three-hour brunches and day-drinking with friends. Her apartment was a disaster, but who the heck cared?

How Do They Do It?

Many of us of a certain age have been in committed relationships for years. And once the kids are grown and the chaos that once reigned in our households has quieted down, it’s often the case that we have to rekindle or our relationships with our partners, or recalibrate them to a new phase of our lives.

Picture Imperfect

We’ve been seeing a lot in the media lately from mothers urging us to get in the pictures with our kids, including this article* in the Huffington Post just the other day. And okay, yes. We’re all for ceasing to worry about baby weight, wrinkles, bad hair days…in theory. Between celebrity selfies and all the images of perfectly lit perfect families we are bombarded with on social media every day, how can we be blamed for staying behind the lens?
