What to do About Changing Libido During Menopause

Let’s talk about sex, baby. Let’s talk about you and me.” That old Salt-n-Pepa song is probably not the tune stuck in your head when you’re going through menopause. And for good reason. Your body is going through a lot of hormonal changes—specifically a dip in estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen is the main female hormone and when it’s at a normal level, it helps to lubricate the walls of your vagina.

Sexuality in the Menopausal Years: All in the Family, or Sex in the City?

As a physician, I want to know what the research tells us about sex in the golden years. Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 assessed the sexual behavior of 1,455 men and 1,550 women between the ages of 57-85 in the Chicago area. It showed that although sexual activity (either alone or with a partner) did decline with age, 73% of people polled between the ages of 57-64 engaged in some type of sexual behavior (and 26% between the ages of 75-85). Overall, men were more sexually active than women, which isn’t surprising.

Sexuality in the Menopausal Years: All in the Family, or Sex in the City?

As a child of the 70’s and 80’s, I was not brought up to think of postmenopausal women as empowered sexual beings. In fact, the image portrayed in the media was more Edith Bunker from All In The Family and less Samantha Jones from Sex In The City. Today’s menopausal woman may be career-oriented, refuses to give in to the laws of gravity when it comes to her body, sees herself as an equal partner in her relationship, and definitely wants to fight evolution when it comes to her sexuality. There is a theory, known as the Grandmother Effect, which attempts to explain why menopause originally developed (and with it, a decline in sex drive).
